13. Pacific Rim
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A85EtOalcsM Generally a blockbuster about giant robots fighting giant monsters would be considered to be not much better than a glorified b-movie. However, when the director is Guillermo Del Toro, one of the most creative, original, and frankly best directors out there, expectations are considerably higher. Described by Del Toro as "a beautiful poem to giant monsters", Pacific Rim deals with a race of giant sea monsters who emerge from a crevice in the pacific ocean, sparking a war with humanity. In response to the devastation, humanity constructs gigantic fighting robots to combat the monsters but they still find themselves quickly in a desperate situation. Pacific Rim will likely contain some of the most incredible special effects ever put into a motion picture and no one is better at creating memorable movie monsters than Del Toro, making Pacific Rim one of the essential films of summer 2013. If Pacific Rim is successful, and there's little reason it shouldn't be, not only will we get one of the most awesome spectacles ever put on screen but also Del Toro might finally get the freedom to make all the projects he's attempted over the last few years.

I love movies, literature, history, music and the NBA. I love all things nerdy including but not limited to Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, and Firefly. My artistic idols are Dylan, Dostoevsky, and Malick and my goal in life is to become like Bernard Black from Black Books. When I die, I hope to turn into the space baby from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
