Predicting The Major 2022 Oscar Winners

For all that Campion’s film is a distinctive and often mesmerising piece of work, after the past couple of years, it seems likely that the Oscars will plump for something a little more uplifting when doling out the big prize - to wit: one of the most famous cinematic tragedies of all time.

OK, West Side Story isn’t a happily ever after kind of picture, but Spielberg’s lush and faithful remake of the beloved 1961 film (itself a major Oscar winner) is as joyous a piece of cinema as we’ve seen in years. He was the perfect director for the project, a man who can handle scale, understands the power of movies like few others, and certainly knows how to tell a rollicking and pacy story.

With a set of characters and songs like West Side Story’s, it would be tough to go too far wrong, but this adaptation of the tale of forbidden love and gang warfare would brighten up the hardest heart, and for that reason, it has more than done its job.
