Predicting The Success Of The Next 10 Major Comic Book Movies
3. Captain Marvel (March 8, 2019)
Predicted Rotten Tomatoes Score: 86% Predicted Box Office: $800m
Everything Marvel Studios touches seems to turn to success, but luckily for us they aren't content resting on their laurels, and are more than willing to experiment with the tried and tested MCU formula. This is especially true of Captain Marvel, which is both the studio's first female-led movie and its first prequel.
The 1990s setting will instantly give the Earthbound sequences a different aesthetic to what audiences are used to from the studio, as well as both capitalizing on the current love of nostalgia that has permeated most of popular culture and expanding the cosmic side of the MCU, which suits the remit of setting each solo movie in a different genre environment.
Despite none of their previous twenty movies scoring less than 66% on Rotten Tomatoes, Marvel Studios are currently on a critical hot streak even by their lofty standards, with the last nine in a row coming in at 82% or higher, making it almost a foregone conclusion that Captain Marvel will follow suit.
Captain Marvel faces strong competition at the box office next March with a release date sandwiched in between guaranteed blockbusters How to Train Your Dragon 3 and Disney's live-action Dumbo meaning it may not quite be able to reach the billion dollar mark. However, it should realistically be aiming to become one of the studio's biggest franchise-starters ever, with Guardians of the Galaxy's $773.3m and Spider-Man: Homecoming's $880.1m probably the targets to aim for.
