Predicting The Success Of The Next 10 Major Comic Book Movies
2. Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse (December 14, 2018)
Predicted Rotten Tomatoes Score: 88% Predicted Box Office: $650m
A prime mid-December release date where family movies always tend to do well, a distinctive and vibrant visual style and the presence of one of popular culture's most iconic characters in their first full-length animated feature; Surely there is no way that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is anything other than a massive success?
No feature-length movie featuring Spider-Man has earned less than $708.9m at the box office, which is a high benchmark to reach, but an entirely feasible one given the character's continued popularity and commercial viability. And that's without even mentioning Nicolas Cage voicing Spider-Man Noir, which should be absolutely glorious.
Developed by producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (with the former on screenwriting duties), the duo have never been involved in a big-screen project that scored less than 71% on Rotten Tomatoes, so hopefully the script will feature the inventive humor that they are famous for, as well as allowing them to put the whole Solo debacle in the rear-view mirror.
2018 hasn't exactly been a stellar year for animation but Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse definitely has the potential to give The Incredibles 2 a run for its money as the best animated superhero flick of recent years and if it can overcome the crowded holiday marketplace, it should easily give Sony Pictures Animation their biggest box office hit ever.
