3. Originality
Prometheus introduced some engaging new elements into the mix but it borrowed heavily from previous installments of the franchise. The basic premise of the plot is frighteningly familiar and almost identical to that of the original
Alien: spaceship heads to a moon to investigate potential source of life, finds croissant-shaped ship, uncovers alien lifeforms aboard and all human crew members but the lead female die horrifically Sound familiar?! Furthermore, other elements of the plot are strikingly similar to scenes from later chapters of the
Alien story: Weylands presence on-board the ship smacks of the same plot-line explored in the critically panned
Alien Vs Predator, whilst Shaws horrific caesarian and the need to rid herself of her unwanted alien progeny is hauntingly reminiscent of the situation that Ripley finds herself in
Alien 3, when she is carrying an alien queen. The sequel needs to steer itself away from the all-too-familiar
Alien blueprint and explore new ideas:
Prometheus introduced a fascinating new mythology of ideas with its world engineering space-gods, so let's hope that the sequel can capitalise on this and guide the plot in exciting new directions.
