Quentin Tarantino: Definitive Guide To Homages, Influences And References

Pulp Fiction

21. On The Waterfront

There is definitely some influence from On The Waterfront (1954) in the way Bruce Willis' Butch character is written, and as a more explicit nod, Butch's opponent in the fight he is supposed to throw is called Wilson, the same name as the fighter Terry Malloy actually does take a dive against in On The Waterfront.

20. A "Bava" Of Heroine

Lance asks Vince whether he wants a "Bava" when buying heroine, a reference to the Italian horror director Mario Bava. Tarantino was inspired to build his film in three acts by Bava's horror anthology film Black Sabbath.

19. The 50's Posters

Jack Rabbit Slim's, which Vincent Vega amusingly refers to as "a wax museum with a pulse," is a Godly shrine to everything and anything 50s popular culture. The posters spread about the walls of the place include: Attack of the Crab Monsters, Dragstrip Girl, Motorcycle Gang, Attack of the 50ft Woman, Rock All Night, Sorority Girl, Daddy-O, Machine Gun Kelly, Something For The Girls, Roadracers, and The Young Racers.
