Ralph Breaks The Internet Review: 5 Ups & 4 Downs

2. The Emotion Falls A Little Flat

A by-product of Ralph being turned into a caricature of himself is that the movie's emotional through-line feels a little shaky.

The core of the film is an examination of Ralph and Vanellope's friendship, and how their closeness has led to a certain co-dependence, which is neither healthy nor practical given the calamity that Vanellope is faced with at the start of the film.

There's certainly a solid message in there about respecting both oneself and others, and how suffocating clinginess can be, but the inevitable, climactic heart-to-heart between the central characters just feels a little off.

It's not offensive or bad, just oddly hollow and, as a result, less likely to wring tears from your eyes than most recent Disney/Pixar movies.
