Even accepting the aforementioned pacing issues, Last Blood's shift away from the war-time setting of the last three movies is very much welcome, splitting the setting instead between Rambo's Arizona homefront and Mexican gangland.

As such it's easy to see why Stallone compared the film to No Country for Old Men pre-release, and while this isn't a touch on the Coens' Oscar-winning masterpiece, a clear and smart attempt has been made to give fans something different.

With a stronger script and better direction this could've truly been the more character-driven action film many were hoping for, and at least in terms of its aesthetic and its setting, they were about half-way there.
