Paul W.S. Anderson's widely-derided action-horror franchise may not be a critical darling, but it's by far the most successful movie series adapted from a video game.

Milla Jovovich is gonzo fun in even the franchise's lesser installments, but there's little here that's either scary or likely to stick with you for very long.

Best Movie: The original 2002 film, by far. Despite being arguably the least-similar movie to the games, it committed fully to its campy B-movie tone and didn't get too reliant on absurd CGI effects. Also, whatever you make of the film as a whole, the laser scene is legendary.

Worst Movie: It's tough to pick the absolute worst, but it's probably the fourth movie, Afterlife, which heralded Anderson's return to directing the series after sitting out the previous two films.

This is the point where the series basically teetered into self-parody, replete with OTT CGI fight sequences and an abusive use of slow-mo. The script's totally boneheaded, even for this franchise, and there's almost nothing there beyond the style.
