The Paranormal Activity series arrived to become the new annual horror franchise just as Saw was wrapping things up, and enjoyed colossal box office success across its six movies, grossing almost $900 million on a mere $28 million combined budget.

It's just a matter of time before the franchise gets rebooted, but whatever happens next, its influence on the found footage subgenre is undeniable.

Best Movie: The original 2009 movie is an incredible testament to what creative minds can do with few resources. It is a dizzyingly scary movie that plays on the viewer's own fears of what goes bump in the night, allowing their minds to come up with the true horror.

Worst Movie: The sequels got progressively worse, culminating in 2015's misguided 3D romp, The Ghost Dimension. Failing to bring the series to a satisfying close and making the mistake of actually showing the demonic Toby, it's a "finale" that feels aggressively against what these films initially set out to be.
