Ranking: 10 Highest-Grossing Horror Movie Franchises

5. Saw ($899.1 Million)

Saw Jigsaw
Lionsgate

After a seven-year absence, the Saw franchise seems to be back to stay, with the recently-released Jigsaw already making its budget back several times over.

Though the series' affinity for torture porn won't be to all tastes, it's hard to deny Saw's immense popularity and status as the true successor to classic horror franchises such as Halloween, Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Best Movie: The 2004 original and it's not even close. The focus wasn't merely on grisly death traps, but it actually put paid to its central characters, was genuinely suspenseful and, of course, had that mind-blowing plot twist.

Worst Movie: There are several terrible Saw sequels, though the worst has to be the new belated sequel, Jigsaw, a lazy rehash that lacks compelling traps or a particularly interesting twist.

Instead it's far too predictable and the ending only serves to keep the franchise going without giving much good reason for it to do so.
