Ranking 9 Biggest Two-Part Movies From Worst To Best

5. The Matrix

Harry Potter Deathly Hallows
Warner Bros.

The first Matrix film came out and collectively blew every Gen Xer's mind in 1999. It told a darkly cynical tale of the world's technological advancements and showcased some stunning action and effects.

When it came time to follow-up their massive hit, the Wachowskis decided to craft two films rather than one. What audiences got initially was Matrix Reloaded, a film big on action and spectacle, but offered little in the form of resolution. It posed a great many questions about the universe, such as who The Architect was, what Smith's master plan was, and how Neo was able to use his powers outside of the Matrix.

Sadly, Matrix Revolutions was largely uninterested in answering any of those questions.

The third film in the series left itself little to do other than to wait around for a giant third-act climax. By the time the climax comes, it all culminates in an over-produced, Dragon Ball Z-inspired fight sequence that completely does away with everything the series once held dear. No more intellectual sci-fi, no more grounded hand-to-hand action, and no more through-provoking storytelling. Instead, the Wachowskis showed that they were far better at beginning stories than they were at ending them.
