Ranking All 22 Major Summer 2016 Blockbusters From Worst To Best
5. The BFG
There's a rather colourful and varied tradition of Roald Dahl adaptations on the big screen: for the most part, they've proved excellent material for adaptation - The Witches is great, James And The Giant Peach worked splendidly and Esio Trot was an emotional joy for instance - but The BFG always held a special place in British hearts at least.
Thanks to an animated ITV version from a couple of decades ago, the story already had one memorable screen sibling, but the addition of family friendly king Steven Spielberg and some whoopsy-splunkers effects, it now has two.
Inevitably, the Amblin master drew out the emotional elements of the story to take centre-stage, pushing the similarities between the Giant and Sophie in similar terms to the link between ET and Elliott. And as ever, the fantastical elements and the rich story-telling peeled away to reveal a story full of heart about finding a place to belong.
