Ranking All 22 Major Summer 2016 Blockbusters From Worst To Best

4. Star Trek Beyond

Summer 2016
Paramount Pictures

Who would have thought that adding a Fast & Furious director to Star Trek would make it more comfortably traditionalist?

Despite the motorbike and the Beastie Boys in the trailers, and the nonsense decision to ruin the twist in the marketing, Justin Lin's Star Trek Beyond felt more like an Original Series episode than either of its predecessors in the Kelvin Universe. Sure, the villain was essentially cut from the same vengeful cloth as both of his fellows, but the dramatic tale of heroism was perfectly fitting as a Kirk-centric story.

Simon Pegg's script work should also not be over-looked (even if the marketing department had absolutely no respect for it): he added serious fan credentials, and the result is a nostalgic joy laden with fan service that more than revitalised the franchise after some signs of flagging in Star Trek Into Darkness.
