Ranking All Of The Live-Action Disney Remakes
5. Christopher Robin
The newest addition to this catalog of animated classics turned live-action, Christopher Robin is an adaptation of the classic Winnie the Pooh cartoons.
But in a truly bizarre move, the film's script seems to have taken way too many notes from Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. Rather than a straightforward adaptation, this is a follow-up, in which Christopher Robin has grown old and forgotten about the Hundred Acre Wood and must be brought back and reminded of the glory of his youth.
That's an admirable message, but the film never gives it the proper chance to shine. The direction here by Marc Forster is truly strange. He gives the Hundred Acre Wood the same desaturated color palette that Burton gave Wonderland, but its even stranger here, with Forster using it even in the opening scenes of young Christopher Robin 'joyously' playing with Pooh and the gang. On top of this, the editing is frequently flat-out atrocious.
There are genuine moments of greatness to be found here, mostly in the form of the characters themselves. Pooh and Eyeore in-particular have some great beats. But overall, its a film that misunderstands the core of its characters and source, leaving much to be desired.
