1. Heath Ledger - The Dark Knight (2008)
Was anyone else ever going to score #1? Of course not. The late Heath Ledger gave a phenomenal, unforgettable performance as The Clown Prince of Crime in Christopher Nolan's comic book opus, stripping away the perfect make-up and bright green hair of previous interpretations in favour of a grungy style that perfectly reflected a gritty, cynical post-9/11 era.
Ledger's Joker easily overshadows Christian Bale's Batman with his terrifying vocal and facial tics, dark humour, social commentary and hilarious insistence that he doesn't scheme (he totally does).
Ledger rightly won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for the role, and it's just a damn shame he was never able to reprise the role as was apparently originally planned for The Dark Knight Rises.
