Ranking All The Major SDCC 2016 Movie Trailers From Worst To Best
9. Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them
There's a new Harry Potter movie coming out. Have you forgotten? Can't blame you - the hype around spin-off prequel Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them seems rather muted outside of intense Potter fandom, and that's despite three trailers that have all played into the iconography of one of the biggest movie franchises of all time. Although, to be fair, it seems those trailers have been rather purposefully restrained; this third Comic-Con release elaborates more on the plot, but doesn't really give away all that much we didn't know from other sources, and many of the beasts remain obscured or just off-screen.
There's nothing wrong with a teasing approach to marketing - that's obviously preferred to spoiling everything - but the almost boutique feeling to Fantastic Beasts makes it feel an incredibly small movie; everything's taking place across a few New York sets and the basic pitch and plot appear identical. There may be a lot more in there - we are likely to visit the American Hogwarts - but for a trailer to restrict a world expansion doesn't do much to increase hype.
On the plus side, we get a lot more of the central quartet - magizoologist Newt Scamander, well-meaning witch Tina, airy sister Queenie and No-Maj Jacob - who do seem to have a nice, distinctly non-Potter relationship.
