Ranking All The Major SDCC 2016 Movie Trailers From Worst To Best
4. Doctor Strange
Marvel showed various little tidbits in Hall H, but the only thing that made its way online was the second trailer for Doctor Strange (likely because hype could easily be stolen by the more enticing Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 or Spider-Man: Homecoming). And, after an initial teaser that was heavy on promise and exposition, but light on strangeness, this one brought the goods.
Front and centre is the world-bending magic of Strange's powers, something some feared would be lightly doled out throughout the film before the big finale, with fractal crystals, twisted light and shifting dimensions all on show, and if anything making those Inception parallels look a little slight. Everything about the film looks more confident and, as a result, better; Cumberbatch's accent less shocking, Tilda Swinton's Ancient One less offensive and there's a neat post-title gag that lands just right.
It's not as striking as some of Marvel's other recent trailers, but neither does Strange look like it will be a straight up traditional Marvel flick (although that gag does show the formula remains).
