Ranking All The Major SDCC 2016 Movie Trailers From Worst To Best
5. Snowden
Quite what sort of audience testing Open Road has been running to wind up at the decision to release the latest trailer for Oliver Stone's thriller about Edward Snowden at Comic-Con (along with a full panel) is probably a conspiracy epic in and of itself. It's not your standard movie that fans of sci-fi, fantasy and superheroes would go for, even in the 21st Century, where the "Comic" part of Comic-Con is becoming increasingly less important.
Regardless, strange releasing approach does nothing to weaken the quality of the Snowden trailer. It's standard topical biopic affair - bit of work, bit of family, bit of distrust, then the real meat that the story's known for before flashes of the repercussions, all scored to a choral cover (here When The Saints Go Marching In) - but it's good standard topical biopic affair. Joseph Gordon-Levitt does away with any questions over suitability and in just two minutes it makes you more than a little paranoid.
Whether Snowden will actually be good is another question - it's been pushed back and forth about the release schedule constantly, with the studio unsure if it's a mega-blockbuster or awards contender, and Oliver Stone's not exactly on form at the moment - but as a trailer, this was a nice surprise.
