Ranking August 2016's Movies - From Worst To Best

5. Pete's Dragon

Suicide Squad Nine Lives Kubo And The Two Strings
Disney

RottenTomatoes Score: 87% (7.3/10)

Box Office: Against a $65 million budget, the Disney remake is only just about to break even, making it another in a long line of blockbuster flops this summer, despite strong reviews.

Verdict: Though it may be too gentle and slow-moving for the youngest audiences, Pete's Dragon is a refreshing breather from over-the-top blockbuster fare. It's an unassuming, effortlessly sweet tale about a boy and his pet dragon, and while low on conflict, is still worthwhile thanks to solid performances and some gorgeous cinematography.

Robert Redford is particularly fantastic here as his relentlessly charming self, while David Lowery's (Ain't Them Bodies Saints) direction cleverly juggles the movie's varying tone. Not among Disney's biggest or most successful recent live-action remakes, but gently enjoyable all the same.
