6. Morris From America

Suicide Squad Nine Lives Kubo And The Two Strings
A24

RottenTomatoes Score: 92% (7.2/10)

Box Office: Sadly Craig Robinson's latest comedy has made just over $20k theatrically, though it's important to remember that it also had an early July release on the DirectTV platform, and clearly didn't cost much to make.

Verdict: The main reason this movie works so well is the charming chemistry between titular youngster Markees Christmas and Craig Robinson. It's not the most complex or original of coming-of-age concepts, but it's shot through with genuine heart while never getting too sappy.

It isn't quite as water-right as writer-director Chad Hartigan's previous film, the terrific This Is Martin Bonner, but the emotional beats land where needed and the central dynamic is marvellous.
