19. The Sea Of Trees

Suicide Squad Nine Lives Kubo And The Two Strings

RottenTomatoes Score: 10% (3/10)

Box Office: After a toxic Cannes premiere last year, it's safe to say this one's dead on arrival. Gus Van Sant's latest cost $25 million and, with a limited theatrical release in just two cinemas, it's not doing any worthwhile business. Ouch.

Verdict: A colossal disappointment and probably the worst film of Van Sant's career, The Sea of Trees strains for emotional resonance but basically falls completely flat with its on-the-nose metaphors and sappy melodrama.

Now, it's worth saying that Matthew McConaughey and Ken Watanabe both give laudable performances here, but it's tough to see what attracted them to Chris Sparling's howlingly awful script, which has already become infamous for its absolute eye-roller of an ending.

At least for Van Sant's sake, everyone will have forgotten about it before the end of the year.
