Ranking August 2017's Movies From Worst To Best
3. Detroit
RottenTomatoes Score: 82% (7.5/10)
Box Office: Even with a modest $34 million budget, Kathryn Bigelow's new thriller opened massively below expectations and hasn't even made half its cost back yet. What a shame.
Verdict: Easily one of the most intense movies of the year so far, Detroit is another winner for Bigelow, who transforms yet another real-life event into a white-knuckle rollercoaster ride.
With a fantastic ensemble cast led by a terrifying Will Poulter, the film may run a little too long and not feel quite as taut as either The Hurt Locker or Zero Dark Thirty, but it's still a thoroughly immersive, totally plausible depiction of 1967's horrific 12th Street Riot.
The disappointing box office will hurt its Oscar chances, but such was the risk of releasing the film outside of the usual Oscar window.
