Rotten Tomatoes Score: 70% (6.2/10)

Box Office: The Emma Thompson-starring drama has made $2.4 million from the British and French box office, though that's clearly not putting much of a dent in its budget.

Verdict: Like most Ian McEwan novels, The Children Act overloads on the sentimentality in its third reel, but thanks to stupendous performances from Emma Thompson, Fionn Whitehead and Stanley Tucci, it just about gets away with it.

After a deliberate, suspenseful first half, the movie veers off to become something completely different, and while still intriguing, there's definitely more than a little mood whiplash for viewers to suffer through. Not the forthright awards player it could've been, but well worth watching for Thompson alone.
