Ranking August 2018's Movies From Worst To Best

8. Alpha

Alpha Kodi Smit McPhee
Sony

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 83% (6.5/10)

Box Office: Despite scoring surprisingly solid reviews and a not-bad "B+" CinemaScore, the poorly-marketed historical adventure film has only barely passed the $30 million mark. With a sizeable $50 million price tag, that's just not going to cut it. As expected, Alpha's a commercial dud.

Verdict: Benefiting from enormously low expectations following numerous delays and atrocious marketing, Alpha is one of 2018's most surprisingly good movies.

Visually enticing - a few dodgy green-screen shots aside - well acted and undeniably adorable if you can get past the slack first act, Alpha is a loving tribute to canine-kind and a tantalising survival film.

Considering most sensible bets has it scoring sub-20% on the Tomatometer a few months ago, this is quite the result indeed.
