While it's still an MCU movie, Black Panther has Ryan Coogler's fingerprints all over it, and he's undeniably made a movie that fits with his own vision and sensibilities as a director.

There are some third act issues, but otherwise Coogler does a great job of balancing action with moments of humour and genuine cultural weight, and his efforts are well-liked and respected across the industry. But will it be enough to get in when the outsiders include Steve McQueen and Adam McKay?

Chances Of Nomination: 4/10

Chances Of Winning: If Coogler does sneak in, it'll be as the fifth man. Damian Chazelle and Barry Jenkins will likely go head to head again, Alfonso Cuaron is a lock for a nod and a previous winner making his first movie in five years, and Bradley Copper the buzzy newcomer. 2/10
