Ranking Black Panther's Oscars Chances In Each Category

With Best Popular Film scrapped, Black Panther's Best Picture chances are a whole lot better. It's still by no means a frontrunner, but the movie has been generating awards buzz since its debut, and it's only going to ramp up further. Of all the categories, Disney will be pushing particularly hard here and, after a win for Moonlight and a nomination for Get Out, this seems more likely this year than it would've done before.

At the same time, the movie isn't among the best of the best and does have a few issues, but it's cultural heft may cover that. If the nominations list is, say, an 8 then it might just miss out, but if it goes 9 or the full 10 it should sneak in.

Chances Of Nomination: 7/10

Chances Of Winning: If it does get a nomination, then there might be an even bigger swell to give it the award and really make a statement, especially after the controversy around Popular Film. Then again, many voters may decide a nomination is enough, and there are a lot of great contenders set to stand in its path: First Man, Roma, Beale Street, A Star Is Born, and even BlackKklansman seem to have better chances right now. 4/10
