9. The Gentlemen - Coach

Guy Richie’s 2019 was a return to form (and/or a regression depending on your taste) for the mockney director, reverting to the multi-character hijinks of his early films. As per for the brash filmmaker, this means a lot of be-nicknamed underworld figures, often skirting around and over the lines of taste.

The cast have a lot of fun here, but no one is able to find as much warmth in their character as Colin Farrell. As Coach, he’s a supporting role in the overstuffed drugs ‘n’ blackmail plot, and one of Richie’s more original creations here. Coach is a peripheral figure in the criminal underworld, with a gaggle of MMA fighters (and wannabe YouTubers) at his disposal.

He delivers Richie’s snappy Tarantino-esque dialogue better than anyone, but brings real depth to his character. A rare man of morals in an often cynical picture, while he makes his living through violence, he prizes wit above everything, delivering quips and bon mots at a great pace, finding himself deeply disappointed when his sparring partners can’t keep up.

Farrell knows exactly what’s expected of him here and delivers it with relish, routinely stealing scenes from the rest of his cast.
