8. Bumblebee

Box Office: Proving just how badly Michael Bay has harmed the Transformers movie brand, the $137 million Bumblebee has only just recouped its budget after 10 days on North American release.

Clearly it should've dropped in a less-crowded time of year, though a Chinese release in early January should at least give its numbers a healthy boost. Not a bomb, but not the hit it deserves to be either, sadly.

Verdict: Without question the best Transformers movie ever made, Bumblebee embraces its family-friendly goofiness while telling a genuinely affecting tale of friendship between Charlie (a charming Hailee Steinfeld) and the titular Autobot.

With a strong reverence for the source material and a total absence of the puerile humour from the Bay movies, Bumblebee delivers a basic yet well-executed homage to Spielberg's E.T.
