Ranking: Every Batman Movie Final Battle From Worst To Best

8. Batman & Robin (1997)

Batman Finale
Warner Bros.

Nobody would dare try and suggest that Schumacher's second Batman movie is better than his first, but it does at least tout more in the way of payoff in its finale, as Batgirl (Alicia Silverstone) teams up with Batman (now played by George Clooney) and Robin to take down Mr. Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger).

The scale of Freeze's plan is certainly larger and more visually compelling than The Riddler's, with his freeze-ray basically decimating Gotham, but it's also let down by its cringe-worthy goofiness (such as when the heroic trio ends up ice-skating towards Freeze's base).

And then there's Bane (Jeep Swenson), a terrific villain so horribly misused both here and throughout the film. To see him effortlessly dispatched by Batgirl and Robin (who each give his mask a half-a**ed kick, transforming him back into a puny weakling) is downright offensive.

There's not much of a physical confrontation between Freeze and Batman beyond a few punches, with Batman quickly gaining the upper hand. While the attempt to make Freeze a more sympathetic character at the end is semi-admirable, it's executed with no nuance or subtlety at all, and him providing a cure for Alfred's MacGregor's Syndrome just comes off as contrived.

That's all without considering the woefully corny dialogue throughout, even if the visuals are solid and Schwarzenegger's performance is a campy delight. It's a lot more interesting and fun to watch than Forever's finale, anyway, so it can't take last place (even if most of the movie is objectively awful).
