Had Beauty & The Beast been the first live-action Disney adaptation, there may have been a lot more resistance to it than what actually met it. By the time it came out, we'd already had Cinderella and The Jungle Book and it was clear that Disney were committed to recapturing the magic of their originals rather than replacing them.

That was particularly key for Beauty & The Beast, which is still the best Disney animation ever made, and which should have been granted untouchable status. Mercifully, Bill Condon decided that remaking as close as possible was the smartest approach, while also peppering the update with a few new scenes - and little details that actually improved the original.

The cast is brilliant, the musical numbers wonderful and there's the same kind of magic as the original boasted. Not as much, but it's definitely there.
