5. Batman Begins

Anything would have been an improvement on George Clooney's nippled Batsuit, but Chistopher Nolan took the Dark Knight above and beyond with his first Batman film.

Batman Begins not only reinvented the hero for the modern age, it helped kickstart the superhero craze that still hasn't run its course in Hollywood.

Nolan's masterstroke here was extracting the Caped Crusader from his comic book roots and planting his boots firmly in grounded territory.

From the icy peaks of the Himalayas to Gotham City's ugly criminal underbelly, Batman Begins is rarely anything less than a though-provoking character study offset against the rebirth of a legend.

Utilising lesser-known villains in Scarecrow and Ra’s al Ghul was another shrewd movie on Nolan's part as it ensured the focus never shifted from Bruce Wayne.

It really started something, not just for Batman, but superhero movies in general.
