Ranking Every Christopher Nolan Protagonist From Worst To Best
8. Tommy - Dunkirk
In fairness, Nolan's just-released war movie barely has a protagonist at all, what with its tripartite structure centered around land, air and sea, but newcomer Fionn Whitehead's Tommy is just about the character who Nolan focuses on the most.
Tommy basically takes default last place from all of Nolan's movies because he's entirely absent from large portions of Dunkirk, and is essentially a blank slate, an archetypal soldier who the audience can project their own feelings onto.
The war epic has been criticised for its lack of character development, though this was clearly by design on Nolan's part, and while Tommy may not make grand speeches about a young lady waiting for him back home, the sheer abject horror of someone with their entire life ahead of them being hurled into war nevertheless makes him a highly sympathetic lead.
