2. Bruce Wayne/Batman - The Dark Knight Saga

Nolan's most successful and iconic creation is unquestionably his dark, gritty spin on the Caped Crusader, as played by Christian Bale.

It's fair to say that Bale was an excellent Bruce Wayne and a good Batman, perfectly embodying the arrogance and suaveness of the billionaire socialite, while his Dark Knight had to suffer a little through a goofy voice and the fact he was so routinely upstaged by the series' villains.

Still, over the course of these three movies, Bale and Nolan created a complex superhero for the ages, one who was initially presented as a vengeful young man out for justice, and three movies later, simply wanted to find someone else to take up his cause.

It remains to be seen whether or not Ben Affleck will truly edge him out as the best overall iteration of the character, but even if he does, Nolan and Bale's combined efforts helped resurrect the character after he'd been a running joke for many years.
