Ranking Every DC Comic Book Movie From Worst To Best

4. Superman

DC Movies
Warner Bros.

In stark contrast to the current approach to DC superhero movies, Richard Donner's Superman was an appropriate, spirited homage to the source material. It is clean, innocent, earnest fun, without the weight of intellect and post-modern, post-superhero hand-wringing that has defined the modern era of comic book movies.

And in Christopher Reeve, Superman might have the single greatest superhero casting of all time. Others have been good, but few have managed to so perfectly capture the contradiction of Superman and Clark Kent. And it's absolutely about more than just glasses and a different hairstyle: Reeve is utterly convincing in his difference.

There's the right balance of weight and humour, and while there are flaws that have been swallowed up by nostalgia (Gene Hackman isn't written very well as Lex Luthor for instance), the overall film is so endlessly charming that they are completely forgivable.
