Ranking Every Godzilla Incarnation
9. Hanna-Barbera
Yes, the same people that brought you The Flintstones and Huckleberry Hound also dabbled in leviathans. Hanna-Barbera's Godzilla Power Hour ran for two 13-episode seasons, first airing in 1978.
The show followed a team of scientists on ocean research expeditions. Every episode the team would run into a huge problem that only Godzilla, who they summoned with sonar signal, could solve. The show also introduced Godzilla's nephew, Godzooky, who did much of the comedic heavy lifting.
After revisiting the show, it isn't hard to imagine Hanna-Barbera's take on Godzilla being entertaining at the time, but it hasn't aged particularly well. At a time in which animation was still evolving, the monster battles in this show don't quite hold up.
Historically Godzilla has leaned more on the cheesy side, which this show often channels. The problem is this doesn't exactly travel seamlessly through the decades. Where kids could surely wake up on a Saturday morning and watch Magilla the Gorilla and The Jetsons, the Godzilla Power Hour is just filled with too much cringe.
The Godzilla Power Hour was the first stab at an animated Godzilla and was fairly decent for its time. However, it is very much a product of the 70s and should probably stay there.
