Ranking Every Godzilla Incarnation

Godzilla v Monsters
Toho Animation

With Godzilla's storied history and Japanese roots, it is difficult to believe an anime version of the character took so long. In 2017, Godzilla finally received an anime adaptation in the form of Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters. Two sequels, Godzilla: The City on the Edge of Battle and Godzilla: The Planet Eater, would soon follow.

In this world, Godzilla is a planet-destroying behemoth that drove humanity off world. After 20,000 years, mankind returns to Earth in an attempt to take the planet back from its new ruler. This Kaiju, dubbed Godzilla Earth, is by far the largest incarnation to date, standing over 300 meters tall.

The films, which are all currently streaming on Netflix, have their merits and their downfalls. To start positively, the animation is beautiful and the Godzilla-centric world is well-crafted. On the other hand we spend way too much time with poorly fleshed-out human characters and Godzilla himself, although clearly a threat, isn't as imposing as we would've hoped.

Watching these three films won't be the highlight of your week, but they are not a bad way to spend an evening. More importantly, they prove that Godzilla can work in this medium and warrant future anime adaptations.
