Ranking Every Godzilla Incarnation
3. Shin Godzilla
As Godzilla anchors Legendary's Monsterverse, Toho chose to develop a new live-action titan of their own. Premiering in 2016, Shin Godzilla ushered in a new era of live-action, Toho-produced Godzilla films and arguably the most unique version of the character ever.
Shin Godzilla's origin doesn't deviate from previous incarnations as it is a product of humanity's reckless use of radioactive materials. In a return to roots, and in contrast to Legendary's concept, Shin Godzilla is a mindless, hostile force that does nothing but destroy.
What separates Shin Godzilla from other incarnations is its appearance. As Legendary's take is meant to resemble animals in nature, Shin Godzilla is truly an unnatural creature born of radiation and mutation. This is the first Godzilla that transforms as the film progresses, featuring five distinct forms.
The fourth form is the most physically intimidating Godzilla ever created. Standing at 118 meters, it was the tallest live-action Godzilla by a comfortable margin. Shin Godzilla also features dozens of razor sharp teeth, red scales reminiscent of radioactive burns and a jaw that can unhinge and separate when delivering violent atomic blasts.
Although Godzilla is often depicted as a protector, there is plenty of entertainment value in watching a violent and aggressive interpretation. Toho has plans for a shared cinematic universe so it is likely we will see Shin Godzilla again soon in all his abominable glory.
