Ranking Every Godzilla Incarnation

2. Heisei Era

Godzilla v Monsters
Toho

The Heisei Era follows the Showa Period and is the second longest series in the Godzilla franchise, beginning in 1984 and lasting through 1995. This era began with The Return of Godzilla, which was technically released with the Showa Era of films. However, since it is the beginning of a new continuity it is officially placed with the Heisei Series. This serves as a reminder that confusing timelines are universal.

The Return of Godzilla is the 16th film in the series, but serves as a direct follow-up to the 1954 original. This move was understandable as this era would prove to be a return to form for the character. This time the monster had a ferociousness and gravity many of the Showa Era films lacked. In this series, Godzilla was shown to be an enemy and, at times, a tentative ally to mankind.

Although it didn't debut household names like Mothra and King Ghidorah, The Heisei Period introduced fans to some of the most vicious enemies Godzilla has ever encountered, including Biollante, Mecha-King Ghidorah and Destoroyah, the latter of which killed Godzilla's son. At the time, this series featured the most brutal monster fights put to screen, many of which are still enjoyable today.

Heisei Era may not be quite the best incarnation of Godzilla, but it is currently the best period in Godzilla's storied history.
