And now we come to the black sheep of the Halloween flock, 1982's Halloween III: Season of the Witch. A film that's infamous amongst horror fans, but completely overlooked in the mainstream.

Casting off the slasher movie shackles of its predecessors, Season of the Witch sought to scare audiences in a fresh new way, whilst evoking ideas from classic horror tropes and hearty doses of folklore.

Telling the story of the sinister Silver Shamrock company who seek to bring Halloween back to its pagan origins - A.K.A. murder and sacrifice - via enchanted children's masks that have been imbued with the power of Stonehenge.

Despite the ludicrous sounding plot, Season of the Witch is a very mean-spirited film that pulled zero punches when it came to the violence and gore - especially when it comes to children being harmed.

Taken on its own, Season of the Witch is a terrific little sci-fi horror movie that has aged surprisingly well, even better than some other entries in the series. However, audiences of the time simply weren't ready for a Halloween film that didn't feature Michael Myers and his absence still hangs over this film to this day.
