9. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore

Does The Secrets of Dumbledore redeem the series? Not really.

It's an improvement on the last one, but let's be honest: it'd be hard to be worse than that. It's still a slapdash, incoherent and anti-thematic mess that continues to juggle far too many characters and half-cooked plot lines, still seeming more interested in setting up the next chapter than actually telling a story.

It's also notably bad as a sequel, since the events of the previous films are almost never mentioned, and several important characters are barely in evidence - most notably, previous secondary lead Tina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston) is only in it for a few minutes.

Once again, it is a very well-made movie on a technical level and the acting is strong across the board, with Mads Mikkelsen in particular standing out and proving a rather better Grindelwald than Johnny Depp.

Furthermore, there are some things viewers will appreciate. Dumbledore's backstory is explored on film for the first time, the film actually acknowledges his sexuality and does give its predecessor's nonsensical Creedence Barebone (Ezra Miller) twist a reasonable explanation, so kudos for that.

Otherwise, this film is a thoroughly unsatisfying affair, and another bitterly disappointing experience for Harry Potter fans.
