Ranking EVERY James Bond Henchman From Worst To Best
9. Steven Obanno (Casino Royale, 2006)
Strictly speaking, not a henchman as he doesn’t work for any of the forces Bond battles with in Casino Royale; his stairwell fight with 007 is too notable and brutal for him to be omitted, however.
Obanno is a powerful African warlord that Le Chiffre makes the mistake of screwing over. After losing $100 million of the General's money, the desperate banker arranges the film's famous card game in an effort to get the funds back.
Le Chiffre clearly thinks he has the situation well in hand; that is until Obanno catches up to him and threatens to chop the blood-eyed villain's limbs off with a ginormous machete. Effectively emasculating the film's main villain is a good way to demonstrate one's formidability.
In a way then, Obanno is strictly Le Chiffre's adversary - but if the enemy of one's enemy is one's friend, no one told James Bond.
If not for a chance encounter, Obanno wouldn't even have any interest in 007 - he attacks Bond only after discovering the spy eavesdropping in a hotel corridor. What follows is a vicious knife fight that stands among the rawest, ugliest melees in the franchise. They're not interested in pretty choreography and fancy moves - these two are scrapping for survival using any means at their disposal.
By killing Obanno, Bond ends up doing Le Chiffre an unexpected favour.
