Ranking Every James Bond Opening Scene From Worst To Best

20. For Your Eyes Only

Ernst Stavro Blofeld is one of the most iconic villains in film history. Appearing in six of the first seven Bond films, Blofeld was Bond's ultimate nemesis. Yet whenever 007 and the head of SPECTRE came face to face, the villain would always manage to escape. Blofeld's comeuppance always felt inevitable, but when it finally arrived, it wasn't exactly what fans were hoping for.

For Your Eyes Only begins with Bond visiting the grave of his deceased wife Tracy. Bond fans know how important Tracy is to the series, and acknowledging her made for an emotional and refreshing moment. Unfortunately, things quickly went downhill from there.

Seeing Blofeld randomly appear should have been exhilarating, but it was only contrived. His weapon of choice against 007 - a remote control helicopter - could have made for a thrilling set piece, but any tension vanishes the second you realize that Blofeld is too busy playing with his toy to actually bother killing Bond.

Instead of using this cold open to satisfyingly resolve Blofeld's storyline, the producers used it to insult someone. Kevin McClory's various lawsuits against Albert Broccoli and Ian Fleming had serious repercussions on the Bond franchise, and his claim that he created both SPECTRE and Blofeld left EON without both for decades.

Blofeld's goofy personality and quick demise was Broccoli's way of saying to McClory "we don't need him anyway!" This cold open had so much potential, but Broccoli and his team completely squandered it.
