The only significant middle-aged female character in the MCU to date is played with dignity and determinaton by the fantastic Rene Russo.

Though her role isn't much more than to serve as counsel to her sons Loki and Thor, she brings some much-needed maternal warmth to the MCU even if it's in a world far away from our own.

She was a strong, forthright woman who tried to keep Odin's temper and Thor's ego in check while assure Loki that he was a cherished part of the family unit.

If that's not enough, she even killed a Frost Giant in the first Thor movie, and later dies at the hands of Algrim while defending Jane Foster. Her death also had a major impact on Loki, and helped bring him closer to his brother.
