Ranking Every New Movie Trailer From This Past Week

1. Bad Times At The El Royale

After years spent writing and producing, Drew Goddard steps back into the director's chair to follow up his cult classic, Cabin in the Woods, with what looks primed to be an even huger cult classic.

For a trailer that actively refuses to reveal anything about the story of the film it is advertising, this works incredibly well. In a stroke of genuine marketing genius, the trailer instead focuses on two things: the El Royale itself and the cast. The El Royale is a unique hotel on the California/Nevada state line, that has a past that includes Dean Martin and the mafia. The trailer practically starts out as an advertisement for the El Royale itself.

The cast is packed with A-listers such as Jeff Bridges, Cynthia Erivo, Jon Hamm, Nick Offerman, Dakota Johnson, and Chris Hemsworth, and the trailer makes sure to show each and every one of them having the time of their lives chewing the scenery.

Naturally, the trailer teases the foreboding nature of the mystery at the heart of the El Royale but without ever giving anything away. Like the very best trailers of all time, this one plays out like an incredibly well-made short film in and of itself, that just so happens to be advertising a feature-length film.

Also, it gave the world the wonderful image of a soaking wet, bare-chested Chris Hemsworth showing off his dance moves. Always a bonus.
