Ranking Every New Movie Trailer From This Past Week
7. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part
After years of waiting, audiences finally got their first glimpse of the highly anticipated follow-up to one of 2014's most delightful surprises. And it turns out: everything is still awesome.
The decision to thrust the characters into a post-apocalyptic wasteland feels out-of-left-field in the best way and takes the sequel in an entirely different direction. Specifically, seeing Emmett being just as earnest and good-natured in such a setting is just inherently great.
The end of the first film teased that Finn's younger sister would get to take over the creation of this Lego universe, and it looks as though the film will be running headfirst into that and the amount of time that has passed since. Where the end of the first film saw her creating less-than-stellar designs, in the five years since she has clearly refined her building skills.
Since the release of the original in 2014, the Lego franchise has released numerous spinoffs and cemented itself as a viable film brand all its own. But this trailer continuously goes out of its way to reassure viewers that it is not going to be a simple by-the-book follow-up. The inclusion of Sweet Mayhem, the alien visitor, as the antagonist and the promise of a space-bound plot all but ensures that this film will be a completely different experience than anything else from this franchise.
