Ranking Every New Movie Trailer From This Past Week
8. Bumblebee
After over a decade of only ever seeing live-action Transformers through the distorted, testosterone-fueled lens of Michae Bay's camera, audiences finally get their first look at what happens when another director gets a chance in this trailer. And the results are nothing short of wonderful.
This trailer teases a much more intimate and character-based film than the mindless fodder of Bay's films. Rather than focusing on convoluted mythologizing or gonzo action beats, director Travis Knight seems much more interested in crafting a girl-and-her-car story that feels more like an Amblin film than a Transformers one.
It's also wonderful to see new designs for characters such as Bumblebee and Starscream that are not only much more akin to their original animated counterparts but also just made with greater clarity in general. The trailer gets a bit carried away in the final stretch, devolving into glimpses of Transformer's action that feels too similar to things audiences have already seen from this franchise.
But overall, this is a surprisingly solid trailer that does a great job of reminding audiences that Transformers don't have to suck.
