Ranking EVERY Version Of The Punisher From Worst To Best

4. Dolph Lundgren - The Punisher (1989)

The 1989 not-as-bad-as-you-remember-it Punisher, starring Dolph Lundgren, is, well, not as bad as you remember it being.

After a 5 year campaign of vengeance against The Mob leaves them pretty much decimated, it seems Frank Castle has won the war. That is, until the Yakuza decides to step in.

Offering a deal that would see a 75/25 split in their favour, crime boss Gianni Franco refuses, and as a result the children of the five families are kidnapped as leverage. With time running out and the slave traders moving in, The Punisher must help the men he has spent half a decade terrorising.

Very much a movie of its time, there are quite a few weird things going on across an hour and a half. Like a machine gun-toting granny or the fact that this version of Frank Castle looks more and more like Lurch from The Addams Family with every passing minute.

There's also the feeling that the only reason the Yakuza were added was to give Lundgren the chance to show off his kung fu skills, and why did they change his back story to ex-cop? Anyone?

Overall it's still a passing grade, but not a high one due to Dolph's lack of acting chops.
