RottenTomatoes Score: 89% (7.9/10) Box Office: This $3.5 million horror flick has made an impressive $17.1 million to date, placing it on-par with last year's big festival horror hit, It Follows. Verdict: Horror movies plucked from film festivals so rarely live up to the hype, but The Witch is a cut above pretty much anything else of its kind from the last 12 months. It's not overflowing with jump scares nor buckets of gore, but it is consistently soaked in an atmosphere of dread and terror, aided by strong character work and a fine ensemble of performances. Yes, there's a sea of hyperbole for viewers to wade through as always happens on the festival circuit, but The Witch is one that for the most part lives up to all the wordplay: it's scary as s*** and its mood drips from every pore.
