Box Office: Jeff Nichols' historical drama has failed to reap back its low $9 million budget, currently settling for a close-but-no-cigar $8.4 million.
Verdict: Though not among Nichols' strongest efforts as a director, the unsettling true story of a Virginian interracial couple raked over the legals coals for their illegal union is a fascinating look at a regrettable period of American history.
Joel Edgerton and especially Ruth Negga do sublime work, and while Nichols' observational approach threatens to invite ennui on occasion, the sheer emotional power of the story carries it through just fine.
Plus, Nick Kroll's in it, and he's surprisingly great...if you can get onboard with the idea of him playing a lawyer.
